Common FAQ

ABOUT THE TEST

Does this test check to see if I am immune to COVID-19?

No. This test checks for an active COVID-19 infection. This is NOT an atibody test. Learn more about the antibody test here.

When should I have this test done?

You should have this test done if you feel you have symptoms of COVID-19 or feel you have had an exposure. In some cases, testing is recommended as surveillance to protect the public from future spreading. Optimal test time is 2-5 days after suspected exposure or onset of symptoms. If you are testing because of travel, it is recommended you test 1-3 days before your flight and 3-5 days after your flight (CDC).

What's included in the test kit?

You will receive all the necessary items to perform a "spit-in-cup" method of collection. 1 sterile cup with label Prepaid return packaging Test order form Sealable biohazard bag Complete instructions

How is this test performed?

This test is to be performed using saliva/sputum collected during a video visit supervised by a Nytingale healthcare professional. This is done to ensure that the right type and amount of sample is produced, which is necessary to make sure that the results of the test are correct. This test is NOT a do-it-yourself at-home test. This test is ordered and supervised by a Nytingale provider. You must complete a supervised video visit for this test to be valid.

Can I get tested without symptoms or other requirements? I just want to know my status.

Yes, you can order and take a COVID-19 test regardless of whether or not you're experiencing symptoms and even if its not required by other agency or organization. Just mark your registration questions appropriately. IMPORTANT: Your insurance is not likely to cover the cost of your test if it is not medically appropriate.

Can I order a test for someone else?

Yes but they will need to have their own chart and a separate email. You cannot order for someone else on your chart or account. This would create confusion about test results and jeopardize HIPAA compliant security. You may enter a family members information for creating a health record and ordering a test but the patient will need to be present during the video visit with ID.

Will I need identification to test?

Yes. You will need a state issued driver's license, state issued ID, or passport to test. If the patient getting tested is a minor, a parent must be present during the video visit with an approprate ID.

What is the accuracy of this test?

Our lab partnerMicroGenDX has validated a real-time Reverse Transcriptase PCR (rRT-PCR) assay for the specific detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The assay validation exceeds the minimum recommendations put forth by the FDA guidance policies. CLICK HERE to Review MicroGenDX SARS-CoV-2 Molecular Diagnostic Validation Summary.

Is this test approved for Emergency Use Authorization by the FDA?

Yes. This assay is intended for use under the Food and Drug Administration’s Emergency Use Authorization authorized on April 23, 2020. See the letter granting inclusion here. HCP fact sheet here. Patient fact sheet here.

Is the lab CLIA certified?

Yes. This test is an rRT-PCR test and meets guidelines for most interstate and international travel, but please refer to the guidelines specified for entry to your destination. MicroGenDX is a CLIA/CAP certified high complexity lab with more than 10 years experience designing molecular based laboratory developed tests (LDTs). MicroGenDX Laboratories, the world leader in providing PCR and Next Generation DNA Sequencing in microbial identification, has validated a real-time Reverse Transcriptase PCR (rRT-PCR) assay for the specific detection of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Does this test detect the new variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus?

Can I use this test to meet travel requirements?

Yes. This test is an rRT-PCR test and meets guidelines for most interstate and international travel, but please refer to the guidelines specified for entry to your destination. Hawaii has specific partners for testing of travelers. Nytingale is not one of these partners. However, we have requested information from Hawaii on the partnership process.

What if the COVID-19 strain I have is one of the new variants?  Can it still be detected accurately?

Yes. Many rapid PCR tests for SARS-CoV-2 may not be able to reliably detect the new variants from the UK, South Africa, and Brazil. The real-time reverse transcription PCR (rRT-qPCR) COVID-19 test from MicroGenDX can detect these variants. In the latest SARS-CoV-2 strains, a majority of mutations are located in the spike protein (S) gene. MicroGenDX chose nucleocapsid protein (N) gene targets for its COVID-19 test in part because mutations are three times more likely to occur in the spike protein (S) gene of the virus. As a result, MicroGenDX’s COVID-19 test is just as accurate in detecting new variants with spike protein (S) gene mutations as it is in detecting the original SARS-CoV-2 strain.

COST AND INSURANCE

How much does it cost?

The COVID-19 Sputum/Saliva test order and provider service fee is $39. You may be able to receive reimbursement from your insurance. Click Get Reimbursed above to learn more about Reimbursify. Lab fee is $0 with most insurance carriers, however, you could incur a charge of up to $99 with the lab. This may be reimburseable as well.
